Final Evaluation.

For this project i chose the theme of Goths. I chose this because it is a subculture that i already know lots about and would find the props and other things easy to source. i got my initial ideas by looking at the various types of goths these included steam punk, modern goth, gothic lolita, and cyber goth, out of these types of goths i was able to source props for all but the gothic lolita. i decided not to have live models for my photoshoot mainly to make the whole process safer. i substituted models for polystyrene skulls and dressed them with a top hat fake goggles and gear decorations. i also used other props i have around the house.
These  consisted of a dragon and various bracelets all summerise the typical gothic subculture. Once I had sourced the props i needed I then set about to make a micro studio setup at home using the two polystyrene skulls and towels as the backdrop. For the lighting I started using natural light and using the curtains to control the amoumt of light reaching the skulls. The main reason why I chose to make a mockup of my shoot was to give me an idea of the positions of the skulls that worked best. By having an idea of the few positions that worked well I was then able to narrow down the amount of photos of the skulls I needed to take in the main studio giving me more time to take photos of the skull with the hat on.

final images before and after editing.

here are my final images.

when i edited this i simply removed the background and added a painted black background on Photoshop. i also removed unwanted marks on the arm and bracelets.

To edit this image i kept it simple by only altering the levels on photoshop.

this image was slightly complex because i removed some of the unwanted lines on the skull to start off with. i then duplicted the layer and altered the hue and saturation of the image to make the goggles purple. this also made parts of the skull and the gears purple so i had to erase these areas. i then duplicated the first later again and altered the hue and saturation to turn the gear green, i then put the saturation on full. and removed all the other parts of the image so that the gear remained. when i was happy with the finished effect i flattened the image.

for this image i used to curve feature this is a feature i like using because it gives a unique effect which would take me many laters to achieve the same effect using the hue and saturation feature. i really like the effect and the colours that the feature is able to give.

My Photoshoot

here are the images i took from these images i selected four of them for my final images.
When in the studio I used the light with a softbox on inorder to remove the harsh shadows inwhich the skulls casted on the background. I chose to use a gray backdrop in order to make editing easier also a gray backdrop is relatively dark adding to the gothic look that i am aiming to achieve. The only thing I found tricky was keeping the images in focus I resorted to manually altering the focus for many of the images.

With this image I tried to create depth of field this worked reasonably well.

lighting setup diagrams

having looked at lighting diagrams i then found a website that would allow me to drag and drop the equiptment onto a page where i wanted it.

health and safety within a studio enviroment.

  • no food or drink to be consumed within the studio
  • wherever possible any cables have to be taped down to prevent trips and any lose cables need to be made clearly aware of.
  • any stands must be secure
  • make sure all people within the studio are not sensitive to the lights in any way.
  • make sure that any props used are stored away until they are needed.
  • make sure that the doors open fully in case of an emergency.
  • nobody should enter the studio unless its time for the photoshoot
  • the models must give full consent before taking any photographs.
